The Historic Core - Los Angeles Stock Exchange
Ground was broken just days before the 1929 stock market crash on the original Los Angeles Stock Exchange (later the Pacific Stock Exchange).
Designed in Classical Moderne Style by architect Samuel E. Lunden of Parkinson and Parkinson. Opened in 1931 at 12 stories, with granite facade and elaborate 2880lb bronze doors.
Above is the ‘mission statement’ (see photos below) with tribute to American capital markets and three bas reliefs by sculptor Salvatore Cartaino Scarpitta. In 1986, the PSE left the L.A. historic core and moved to new quarters and the building is now operated as a nightclub and event space.
Los Angeles Stock Exchange Merges with Pacific Stock Exchange (1973)
The Los Angeles Stock Exchange officially merged with the Pacific Stock Exchange in 1973, marking a significant consolidation in the financial landscape of the West Coast.
This merger brought together two prominent entities, streamlining operations with the goal of enhancing market efficiency.
Move to the New Pacific Stock Exchange Building (1986)
Trading at the new facility in the Beaudry Center II building in Los Angeles began with Mayor Tom Bradley ringing the 6:30 a.m. opening bell. The day closed with a volume of 5.34 million shares, which is close to the exchange’s 1985 daily average of about 5.7 million shares. The exchange hopes that the new location will lead to higher trading volume than was handled at the exchange’s old location at 618 S. Spring St. Source: LA Times, January 14, 1986
