Los Angeles' architectural history - Samuel-Novarro House
In the chronicles of Los Angeles’ architectural history, the Samuel-Novarro House stands out not just for its design but for the dramatic narrative woven into its very walls.
In 1931, the silent film icon Ramon Novarro discovered a breach of trust: his manager, Louis Samuel, had been diverting funds for personal gain, notably to cover the mortgage of his home designed by Lloyd Wright. The fallout from this betrayal saw Novarro assuming ownership of the property through a settlement, turning a page in the home’s storied history.
Under Novarro’s direction, Lloyd Wright was tasked with enhancing the property, leading to the creation of a music room, a bedroom suite, and an outdoor pergola, enriching the home’s character and functionality. Novarro’s residency until the late 1930s imbued the estate with a layer of Hollywood mystique, a legacy that has been preserved through meticulous restorations by Justin Krzyston and the stewardship of figures like Diane Keaton and Christina Ricci.
Architectural Design Art and An Historical Artifact
For those intrigued by Lloyd Wright’s architectural ingenuity, Los Angeles offers several other remarkable homes designed by him, each with its own unique story and aesthetic appeal:
- The Sowden House, known for its distinctive Mayan Revival style.
- The Wayfarers Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes, a stunning glass church that blends spirituality with the natural landscape.
- The Hollyhock House, Wright’s first Los Angeles project, which showcases his innovative use of indoor/outdoor living spaces.
I encourage you to explore these architectural treasures and return to this site for more insights into the fascinating world of Los Angeles real estate.
